The National Portrait Gallery’s exhibition program is multi-faceted, exploring historical and contemporary Australian and international portraiture. It includes exhibitions that showcase the Gallery’s permanent collection; temporary exhibitions that explore the broad-ranging notions of portraiture itself; and travelling and online exhibitions which reach beyond the Gallery building to diverse regional, national and international audiences.

Our online exhibitions and the supplementary online components of our exhibitions are interactive, immersive and capitalise on new and emerging digital technologies.

We strive to maintain and further our standing, nationally and internationally, as an inspirational art museum delivering innovative and wide-ranging exhibition programming.
