Self, titled looks at the way we create an image of ourselves through the prism of our family. For the project my family wrote one-page autobiographies. The biographies were combined to create a seemingly random narrative. The unique phrasing that each person used was repurposed to express my biography, illustrating the way we inherit habits and character from family, whether it be physical or in this case linguistic. In Self, titled the proximity of text and image articulates the notion that the self is a coded text, ready to be read and disseminated. This remixed narrative reflects the complex and diverse conditions of family itself and results in a kind of communal self portrait.
