Professor Carrick Chambers AM

Professor Carrick Chambers AM (b. 1930) is a botantist who was director of the Royal Botanic Gardens, Sydney from 1986 to 1996. Chambers was born in Auckland, New Zealand and educated at the Universities of Auckland, Sydney and Cambridge. He joined the Department of Botany at the University of Melbourne as a lecturer in 1963 and was Professor of Botany from 1968-86. His research centred on electron microscopy and fine structures, the structures of plant viruses and palaeobotany (fossil botany). Chambers has a strong commitment to conservation and landscape design. He is currently an Honorary Research Associate in the Plant Sciences Branch at the Royal Botanic Gardens.
