The photographs by Nan Goldin in Tough and tender are warm images of heartache and hope.
Nan Goldin was born in Washington DC in 1953 and grew up in suburban Boston. Her influential photographic series The Ballad of Sexual Dependency legitimised close documentation of personal life.
The photographs in the exhibition, taken between 1981 and 1991, are selected from the National Gallery of Australia’s holdings of six of Goldin’s photographs.
