For the past four years the National Portrait Gallery has facilitated an annual Acquisition Fund whereby members of the Gallery’s Circle of Friends contribute to the purchase of a portrait for the Gallery’s collection. Non-members are welcome to contribute.
Director of the Portrait Gallery, Angus Trumble, encourages all Australians to show their support for the Gallery and its collection by contributing to the Fund.
‘The Gallery’s donors and Foundation are instrumental in our ability to expand the collection for the Australian public to experience and enjoy. It is often overlooked that even the smallest donations assist us in enhancing the collection. That is why the Acquisition Fund is such an important annual initiative for us,’ said Angus.
‘It is about bringing people together and creating a personal connection to our collection. When we purchase an artwork using the Acquisition Fund, it is those individuals who made a contribution that are personally responsible for that work being in our collection. There is no better feeling than being able to walk into the Gallery and see that work on display for everyone to enjoy.’
This year’s Acquisition Fund will assist in the purchase of a portrait of Reg Richardson painted by Mitch Cairns for the 2014 Archibald Prize.
Reg is one of the country’s leading entrepreneurs and philanthropists, arts supporters, and passionate Rabbitohs devotee.
The Circle of Friends Acquisition Fund has assisted in the purchase of several important portraits for the Collection including Christopher Wallace-Crabbe by Kristin Headlam, David Malouf by Rick Amor and, the 1910 portrait of Elizabeth Sarah (Lillie) Roberts by Tom Roberts.
The National Portrait Gallery is endorsed by the Australian Taxation Office as a Tax Deductible Recipient, which means cash donations over $2 are fully tax-deductible.
