- Welcome to "Story Time!" I'm Amy from the Access and Learning team. We're streaming live from Ngunnawal and Ambury Land today. And I've got a few Zoom tips just to begin with. If you could keep yourself in speaker view, not gallery view, that will optimise your viewing pleasure. Also, if you could keep your microphones on mute, and the camera's turned on, that would be wonderful. Please also filter through questions and comments via the chat. We are recording today's session, and we also have Therese, who's doing our Auslan interpretation today. We have the author, SV Middleby, and the illustrator, Auntie Fonu, joining us today. So the first thing we're gonna do is have our lovely author, SV Middleby, read the story, and then Auntie Fonu is gonna come in and help us with our craft activity. We're very excited. So without further ado, I'd like to introduce SV Middleby to read her story "Do You Want To Meet Your Grandma?"
- Thank you so much, Amy. It is so lovely to be here and to see all of your faces. My name is Solly, you can call me Solly. And as Amy said, please make sure you pop things in the chat, or you unmute yourself. If you wanna ask a question, just wave at us. But I'm really happy to be here. And on behalf of myself and Auntie Fonu, we wanna say a massive thank you to the Portrait Gallery for having us today to share our collaboration, this book, "Do You Want To Meet Your Grandma?" So are you excited to meet your grandma? Has anybody read this book before? Do you wanna give me a wave? Oh, look, I can see some little kids there have got a copy of it with them. Hi, how are you? It's good to see your faces again. Might be some of our friends who we lived with up in the Highlands of Papua New Guinea. Well, before I start, I just wanted to tell you a little bit about this book. So this book's a really fun adventure to meet some of your grandmas from long ago. So a very, very, very long time ago. Not your grandmas that you know now, or your grandma's grandmas, but grandmas from a really long time ago. So we're gonna go on this adventure and we're gonna see maybe if we're still a little bit like them, we might see what they've got to teach us and learn a little bit about how we're all connected to each other. So are you ready to start the story? Yes? Okay, fantastic. So would you like to meet your grandma from 7 million years ago? Do you want to see what she was like? Would you really like to know? Hmm. Okay. She doesn't look very convinced, does she? What do you think? Shall we turn the page? All right, here we go. That's my grandma, but she's got hair from head to toe. Well, that's what we needed 7 million years ago. And look, here's some of her other grandkids. Can you see them? Aren't they beautiful drawings? There's a chimp, there's a gorilla, there's an orangutan. This is my favourite, the baboon. He's a beautiful mandrill baboon. Look at his face. And there's us. Have any of you ever seen any of these before? Have you ever been to the the zoo and seen one of these? I saw one of these, and when I looked at him, I thought, "We're a bit like him." What do you think? Are we still a bit like these relatives? Do you think you're still a little bit like this Grandma? Yes? No? What do you think? Let's turn the page and see if we're still a little bit like this Grandma. Do you feel her when you climb to the top of a tree or feel the bark under your fingers and the thrill of being free? Do you feel her in the love of your family and your friends? What about the fights and games and tears and laughs that's never seem to end? Do you feel a bit like that Grandma? Who likes climbing trees? Put your hand up if you like climbing a tree, yup. There's one that loves, yeah. We still like climbing trees, don't we? And what about fighting? Do you ever fight with your brother or sister? Hmm. Yeah, sometimes. I can see some nodding. Now, what do you think this Grandma would tell you if she was here today? 'cause grandmas have very good advice, don't they? She'd say be fun, be kind, be adventurous. Remember how lucky you are. Use your brain and use your heart no matter where you are. Shall we meet another grandma? Would you like to meet another grandma from even longer ago? Yeah. Yeah? Okay. I can see some nodding. Yup. All right. Let's see. Let's meet our grandma from 256 million years ago. Can you even imagine how long ago that was? That's so long ago. Do you think you'd like to meet her? Is she someone you'd like to know? Yes? I can see some yeses. Look, this one really wants to meet her now, but these two not so sure. Okay, let's turn the page. A lizard? You've gotta be kidding me. But she's got a tail and her blood is cold. I know, she's such a wonder to behold. And look, here's some of your cousins. Cousin crocodile, cousin humpback whale, cousin kangaroo, cousin elephant. And there's you, and look. Someone's in the kangaroo's pouch. So these are all her grandchildren as well. And what about a lizard? Do you think you're still a bit like a lizard? Anybody? Wanna put your hand up if you think you're like a lizard? Or shake your head if you don't think you're like a lizard? Hmm? No, not like a lizard. Not like a lizard? Let's see. Maybe we're a little bit like a lizard. Let's have a look. Do you feel her when you're lying on a hot rock in the sun? Or when you lose a baby tooth, only to grow another one. Do you feel her when you're rushing to get from place to place or keeping still and quiet while others like to race? Does any of that seem like you? Do you like to lie in the sun when you get cold? You ever laid on the hot concrete? It's nice, isn't it? Especially when it's a bit cold, if you've been in the pool or the water. And what about, have you lost any teeth? Who's lost a tooth? Hmm? Did you grow another one when you lost it? Well, there you go. Just like our lizard grandmother. What do you think this grandma would teach you? Is she gonna have some advice? Let's see. What would she teach you if she could talk, what might she say? She'd say, "Think quick, think slow, think carefully. Your choices are yours to make. Make them well and wisely. The future is yours to shape." Shall we meet one more grandma from even before the lizard? Yeah? Do you want to meet your grandma from 530 million years ago? Can you imagine who she was? Do you really want to know? Okay, what do you say? Do you wanna know? I can't hear you. Yes? All right. What do you think she's gonna be? Does anybody know who hasn't read the book? Can anyone guess what this grandma's gonna be? You wanna put it in the chat or unmute yourself? Or do the actions of the grandma? What sort of grandma? Oh, we've got a fish. Let's see. No way. My grandma was a fish. You were right. Look at her. She's a funny looking fish. She's a ancient, ancient fish, but she has gills and she breathes underwater. I know it's crazy, but you're her granddaughter. And look, here are some more relatives. Dinosaurs, birds, snakes, fish. They're all your relatives and they're all her grandkids. How about that? Did you know you were related to the dinosaurs? It's pretty cool. So I bet you all... Does anyone feel like grandma fish a bit? Do you still feel a bit like a fish sometimes? Hmm? When do you feel like a fish? Let's see you do some of the actions of when you might feel a bit like a fish. Hmm? Yeah, I can see some swimming. That's right, let's have a look. Do you feel her when you're floating on the top of the sea? Can anybody float? I'm a good floater. No. Some skinny people can't float very well. You can float? That's pretty good. What about diving down beneath to where you wanna be? Can you put your head under when you go to the pool? Put your head under for a while? Do you feel her when you're happy splashing in the tub? Or getting drenched in a thunderstorm from the sky above? No, you don't like running in the thunderstorms? Some people prefer an umbrella, huh? So what would she teach you? If she could speak, what might she say? She'd say, "Be here, be now, be present. You're where you're meant to be. Don't think of the past or the future. And let yourself be free." Shall we meet our last grandma? Are you ready to meet the last grandma? She's from so long ago. Can you imagine who this one might be? So, so long. Okay. Do you want to meet your grandma from 13 billion years ago? That's not even millions. That's billions. That's before the earth. Can you imagine what she looked like? Do you really wanna know? These kids look pretty excited. This would be fun, wouldn't it? To be around a beautiful campfire like this, with all your friends? Getting an interesting story here from Uncle Lambert? So do you wanna meet her? Shall we turn the page? Ready? Whoa. My grandma was a star? I came from a star? How can that be? Well, when she exploded, she made all our matter. So that's what you are made of. The stardust that she scattered. So me, the room, the book, trucks, bananas, Jupiter, waterfalls, and you. All made of stardust. Which is pretty great, isn't it? Does anybody there feel like a star sometimes? Yeah. Do you feel a bit sparkly? When do you feel like a star? Does anyone wanna say or do some actions of when you feel like a a star? You have to unmute yourself if you want to tell us. Well, there's some twinkle, twinkle fingers. Let's have a look. Do you feel her when you, oh-
- [Child] I feel like a star.
- Yeah, you feel like a star.
- [Child] Feel like a star now.
- Right now. That's fantastic. I feel like a star now too. Thanks to you. Do you feel her when you wonder what it's all about? Have you ever done that? Have you ever looked at the stars and thought, just wondered about everything? Or make a wish and have a dream free of fears and doubts? They're very good things to wish on, stars. Do you feel her when you sparkle? I think that's what you were just doing, wasn't it? Sparkling, your own light shines bright. These little girls are having a great time up here doing some cartwheels. Or when her star light bathes you in the middle of the night, what do you think grandma star would say to you? What would she teach you if she could speak, what might she say? Do you wanna read this one with me? Can everybody read those big words there? Some people might. "Shine on, shine bright, be dazzling. Remember how magic you are and that anything is possible when you wish upon a star." So next time you wonder who you are and from where you came, just think about your grandmas who for all of us are the same. Every single one of us, those grandmas are the same. All 8 billion humans on earth, we all get to share those same grandmas. So that's the end of the story. And now I want to invite back Amy and Auntie Fonu. So these are very special people, Amy and Auntie Fonu. I don't know if you can tell, but Amy and I are very lucky because we share all these grandmas with all of you. But we also share our actual grandmas, our mothers and fathers mothers. So what does that make us? If we have the same grandmothers?
- Maybe those carers can help little ones writing the chat, their guesses.
- Can anybody guess what that makes us? I think there might be some of us in the groups there.
- What do you think?
- Can anybody guess what we are?
- I can... I can see if you've been...
- Sisters. Well done, Peter. I'm not sure how you got that. But that's right, we're sisters. And Auntie Fonu, I like to think of her as my soul sister, because I think these grandmas, they might have brought us together to make this book together. So she's my very special soul sister. So I'll hand back over to this one, and then I hope you've all got some crafty stuff at home or some pens and papers so we can make some grandmas together.
- Yeah. Well, if you don't have some craft materials right in front of you, maybe now is the time to go about your house and try and collect some. I collected some from my house and my sister is gonna share 'cause sharing is caring. So-
- Or we might fight.
- We might fight. Like the ape, like the monkey grandma.
- There's a lot of monkey grandma in our family, definitely.
- There is. So I've got some paper, very special. Some paper, 'cause I know Solly likes to draw. So I got some paper and I got some texters. I also got some scissors to cut with. I found some egg cartons at my house. I also found some little cupcake holders. But you know what? These are sort of everything that I found around my house. I was kind of wondering, auntie Fonu, what did you find where you are, because you're in Fiji at the moment. So what have you got?
- Hello, everyone. Fiji, our nature and environment is very, very colourful, and that's where a lot of the inspiration for the drawings in the book came. So I went into my father's garden and picked a lot of flowers to make a flower grandma, I think.
- Aw, nice.
- But I also brought a toilet roll. Oh, we've got toilet rolls. Does anybody else have toilet rolls?
- Quick, run, get some.
- Quick, run, get some.
- The one thing we all share, our grandmas and toilet rolls.
- Maybe with permission from your carers. We don't want lots of toilet rolls if they're in use. Yeah.
- Yeah. And I also have scissors.
- Scissors.
- And...
- Oh wow. Look at your crafting table.
- And some pegs just in case. Just in case I need to clip something on after I put some glue on. Can you see? Yeah.
- Oh yeah. Nice. Yeah.
- We have a few natural materials as well. My three-year-old collected these this morning. So funnily enough there's not a lot, but they're very specific. So we've got some flowers as well, Fonu. Some beautiful flowers. I was thinking those flowers actually, they almost look like coral to me. So if I maybe do the fish grandma, I could actually turn these flowers into a coral.
- Yeah.
- Yeah.
- So corals are kind of like the flowers of the sea.
- Absolutely.
- Just like I think stars are really like the flowers of the sky.
- Flowers of the sky.
- That's beautiful.
- So have you all got your crafting materials? What grandma are you gonna make?
- Did you have a favourite grandma, Amy?
- I did have a favourite grandma. Actually, I love them all to be totally honest. Oh no, don't put sparkles on me. My favourite grandma is the lizard grandma, okay? You know why? Because sometimes I like to just curl up in the sun.
- She's very good at that. Very true.
- I'm very good at my lizard-like behaviour. And some lizards do a bit of swimming. So maybe I'm sort of fish-lizard grandma influenced.
- What about you guys at home? Which one are you making? Do you wanna put it in the chat or tell us?
- Yeah.
- Are you gonna draw one of the grandmas or are you gonna craft one? Oh, you've got some beautiful stuff there.
- Is it your favourite grandma or the one that you just want to make? Because I must admit, I feel like I really wanna make the fish grandma, but my favourite grandma I think might be the lizard grandma.
- Maybe you could do a cousin of theirs.
- Oh, maybe a relative. Let me just have a look at the book again.
- Amphibian.
- Hmm?
- Crocodile?
- A crocodile. One of the relatives. One of my relatives. That's a good idea. Maybe you don't wanna make a grandma today. Maybe you want to do another relative. What was one of the star relatives? We had- Oh God. Everything.
- Trucks.
- We had trucks, we had bananas. I think this is... Yeah, this is the page. A waterfall. Planets. Oh my goodness. Too many things to choose from. Maybe we can begin with one and after story time, you can keep on going. Make more.
- Yeah, I was gonna draw, but then I found this fun sparkly stuff, so.
- Oh.
- Sort of making a bit of a-
- The material's inspiring us.
- I might have to use one of your little one's flowers.
- We've got lots, we're gonna share our materials over here. But we are sisters, so we might fight.
- We might fight.
- Okay?
- It was lucky he picked two, otherwise there'd definitely be a fight.
- Yeah.
- Yeah.
- There's actually three, so we might fight.
- Ooh.
- The fight's back on. Do you wanna see us fight?
- No.
- Sister fight.
- Sister fight.
- But you've always got to makeup, huh? You can have a sister fight-
- True.
- That's fine. But you've gotta make up.
- And if anybody wants to show us what they're working on, you can also angle your camera down, and show us so we can see. Or you can hold it up if you want to. It doesn't have to be finished. You can just show us what you're crafting.
- Where you are at. We love seeing your faces, but we also wanna know what you're making.
- Yeah. Let's see yours, Fonu.
- Yeah, I wanna see Fonu's too.
- Not, not yet. Sorry.
- Yeah.
- Not anything yet. Give me a minute.
- Fonu, can I ask you a question about how you made your illustrations?
- Sure.
- So did you always sort of want to be a book illustrator? Have you illustrated a book before?
- No, this is the first book I've ever illustrated.
- The first one?
- Yeah. But I've always... I've been drawing since I can remember. I've always wanted to be an artist and I've always loved books.
- Ah.
- I think it was destined, like Solly says. And it was just a matter of us being brought together with the right magical story.
- So when you read Solly's words, did you know exactly what you wanted to draw straight away or did you go make lots and lots of pictures and sort of decide and come up at the end with a...?
- So, Solly gave me some images of our ancient grandmothers and the sort of scientific drawings or ideas of what they might've looked like. And I tried to think about their spirits, which is what Solly described. The spirit of kindness and playfulness with the grandmother ape, and sort of thought about the advice that they were giving and what kind of character they would have if they were in real life right now and what they might wear, what they might like doing. And I sort of... I experimented I guess.
- Oh, that sounds like...
- again,
- [Amy] That sounds like a-
- Quite right.
- That's a core characteristic of a scientist and an artist. Experimentation.
- Experimentation, exactly.
- Yeah.
- And then consultation.
- Consultation.
- I then showed Solly. And so if she agreed or if something was not quite right and she felt like, I don't know, I think grandma fish is quite sassy. We both agree that it was a good idea to have things a pearl necklace made of bubbles. Just having fun with it, I guess.
- Yeah.
- I think if something doesn't feel fun then it's probably not quite right.
- Yeah, if you don't find it fun, other people might not find it fun either.
- Right.
- Yeah.
- And books should be fun, huh?
- Absolutely. I like how you said that you looked at scientific drawings, so you looked at other people sort of drawings and other artists drawings and they influenced you and then you listened to the words and what they meant to you and how you could portray, you know, characteristics like sassy, and, you know, other, you know gentle, and those lovely messages from each of the grandmas. I think Solly's definitely doing the sparkle.
- Oh yeah, that's lovely.
- She's taken up with the glitter paper.
- Yeah. I'm not sure what exactly it is anymore, but...
- Looks a bit like the star grandma, I gotta say.
- It might be from what you said before, Fonu, about how the stars are the flowers of the sky and the... So it's got a little flower in it.
- I wish I could get some sparkles for mine.
- Yeah.
- They're similar.
- yeah. It needs some spark. Maybe you can throw us some sparkles real hard.
- Yeah.
- I'm in Fiji.
- I admit I've got quite the crafting table at home.
- But I think everyone should have a toilet roll. Everyone should have an egg carton. Yeah, I must admit I found this great wool, and I thought that would be wonderful for the monkey Grandma.
- Let's have a look.
- Have a look.
- And see if it- What do you think?
- Put it on.
- Yeah.
- We'll see.
- A bit apy.
- Bit apy, make it a little...
- Very nice.
- It's a great look, Amy.
- Yeah. You like that one?
- Yes. Call you spaghetti hair.
- My fish grandma is a little bit multi-colored because I've used eye stickers to make... I'm not sure if everybody can see that, but yeah.
- These are pretty cool. Maybe you could...
- Mm.
- I've got a little doily and I've just popped it in half.
- And doily is a very fun grandma thing.
- They're a bit versatile. Maybe I'll cut some out. See I do like scissors, but I also like just tearing paper. Anybody at home tearing paper? Making a little bit of a collage? Now.
- And where is the Kelly-Hanku family? Are you in Papua New Guinea or are you in Sydney? Sydney? Give me a thumbs up for Sydney. Hmm. Or Papua Guinea. Yeah.
- That'd be great to know where everybody's dialling in from. Are you overseas? Are you in Australia? Where are you from? You wanna get your carers to write in where you are?
- Here we go, they're pressing in some things.
- 'Cause we would really like to know. I think someone's been able to unmute.
- Grandpa's house.
- Just tell us.
- We'd like to see the drawings from grandpa's house. What are you drawing there? Hmm?
- I think we can hear you.
- Or are you gonna do a mime of a grandma? Canberra?
- Yeah.
- Hi.
- [Speaker] Hi.
- [Speaker] Hello. Hello.
- [Speaker] Grandma's sleeping.
- Oh, Grandma's sleeping. Oh, I've lost the tape. I might have to use some string.
- Was there someone else that unmuted just before then to tell us where they were from? I thought I-
- [Speaker] Yeah, we're in Sydney. The Kelly-Hankus are in Sydney with our other Fiji family from Melbourne.
- Oh, lovely.
- Some relatives.
- [Speaker] Yeah. Well, for one day, he's only three, so she's walked away. Okay.
- [Speaker] Yeah. One of my daughters is here with us.
- Ah, lovely.
- That's really nice. It's lovely to see all your smiling faces. I wanna see some of the things you are working on though. I'm artistically curious. I'm a little bit of a snoop. I like to see what people are making.
- Oh, that's a beautiful star, I can see. Oh, lots of drawing.
- Oh, another toilet roll. Is that another toilet roll?
- Look at those pencils. Are those pencils?
- Oh, look at the goggly eyes.
- Look at that. Oh wow.
- And there's a beautiful drawing. We've got another person in Fiji. Yeah.
- Yeah.
- Wow. That's great. That's beautiful.
- Ah, so busy and industrious.
- You know, I feel like I might draw on mine now.
- You just have to do what you feel like when you're crafting.
- Yup.
- Some paper that's blown away in the wind.
- Ah. Is anybody else outside? No, only Fonu. Only Fonu's gotta battle the elements with her crafting. Yeah.
- That's it.
- Yeah. I think I'm gonna use some of these leaves for the fins, but I'm going to steal it off my sister.
- Oh, no, that's my leaf.
- Because she's taking all of them.
- Well look, I really needed one more for this to be-
- Look, one fins very small.
- All perfect, and she's taken it.
- Oh well. Just sharing is caring.
- That's true. Maybe I'll have some of these.
- Yes.
- I think grandpa's gonna draw something there.
- Do we have any other grandparents here today? It's a bit of a celebration. Grandmas, this book.
- Have we got in glue?
- We do have glue. We've got two different types of glue. We've got triangle glue and round glue.
- Oh, okay.
- They're very different.
- Okay. What would you recommend?
- They're exactly the same. They just come in completely different containers.
- I'm gonna go with circle glue.
- Yeah. I wanna use this egg carton. It's inspiring me.
- Maybe use some-
- But the problem is I'm not sure yet how I'm gonna put it on my fish or if I'm just gonna actually make a completely different-
- Oh that's great. Maybe we could make a little ocean out of the egg carton for the fishy.
- Oh, like a stand?
- Yeah.
- That's a good idea.
- Could you help me do that?
- Sure.
- Could you make me a little stand?
- Well, I'm right here with the glue.
- Yeah, you ready? I side-stepped the glue. I've been using staplers. What do you have? What sticking material did you find in your house?
- There's some beautiful cloth there from... It's that easy.
- You've got some glue.
- Ah, yep, some, good glue. Oh, lots of people have glue and some have staplers. And a sticky tape is a big favourite in our house. I dropped the sticky tape, absolutely.
- Oh, you dropped the sticky tape? I need the sticky tape.
- You don't wanna use the triangle glue?
- No, I don't really like working with glue.
- I'm gonna get you the sticky tape then.
- Glue's not a favourite of mine.
- Fabulous, Hector. Magic hands. Do you need a bit more? Put some more on there-
- I want more. I want it covered.
- Yeah, let's do it.
- Could even make it... I'll use this glue.
- Yeah.
- All right.
- Well the sticky tape's there, but I think the glue's better.
- Oh look, it's purple glue. Oh, I want to use it now.
- This is like our ocean home for our grandma fish.
- Yeah.
- With many eyeballs.
- No, no, they're scales. I repurposed them.
- Oh.
- They're not eyeballs anymore. And maybe we could make some coral.
- That's a good idea.
- I really am inspired by what Fonu said about the flowers.
- What else have you got?
- Of coral being the flowers of the sea.
- This would make good... Oh no, that's in your fish.
- Well, what about if we cut up some straws?
- Yeah.
- And we make some coral like that?
- That sounds good. That will definitely look like-
- This is where the sticky tape come in handy.
- Yes. And we could stick them around here.
- Yep. Join them all together with sticky tape. I'll cut up some more. Is anybody else making a bit of a landscape, a bit of an environment for their grandma? Or is your grandma just like my fish just floating at the moment?
- More coral?
- More coral. Yep.
- Do you want that one?
- Let's see how this goes. And then maybe we'll try some more.
- Yeah.
- Some pretty coral going around our little ocean home.
- We've got some more paper straws if you want them. We've also got some yellow.
- That would make good coral too. Maybe we can cut some of that up.
- Yeah. Okay. Let's cut up some of that.
- Oh, there's some sparkly coral.
- Oh, she's putting sparkles on everything.
- Oh, look.
- Oh no, now she's found the green sparkle.
- Oh, we've gotta use that. Oh, look at Fonu's table. How are you going, Fonu?
- Doing well.
- Oh, look at that.
- I'm just doing a little face for her. She's got a flower for a nose.
- Oh. I like it.
- Yeah. Can you...?
- You've got some clothing on your grandma. Does anybody else have some?
- Oh yes, she's got a skirt with this.
- Oh, it's beautiful.
- Special that I have. I'm just gonna stick some leaves in it.
- Oh that's nice.
- She's gorgeous.
- Yeah, so she can twirl.
- Yeah.
- Might take her for a walk. We'll go to town together after.
- Take her for a coffee.
- A spin.
- A cup of tea afterwards.
- Yep, yep, yep.
- Yeah. Oh, look at these two. They're fabulous with the goggly eyes.
- Yeah.
- What's that sticking out the top of them? Is that cotton wool? Is that cotton wool? Oh it is.
- Oh, that's pretty cool.
- Wow.
- Very clever.
- And look, we've got some cutting happening.
- Oh wow, show us your-
- There's some 3D construction.
- Bring it over. Yeah, a little bit further. Oh look at that. You've put that beautiful material like the starry sky almost. And that is that a feather?
- That's wonderful.
- Very clever.
- The feather at the top.
- Clever.
- From one of your relatives.
- What a clever idea.
- Yeah.
- I didn't realise this was also a sticker. That's pretty cool.
- I think... Oh, someone looks like they're about to go for a swim. Like their grandma fish.
- Yeah. That's even better. You're not crafting, you just gonna be the grandma. Here we go. We're going in the pool. Let's see. Can we float? Can we put our head under? Don't know if that's ever happened on story time before.
- I don't think that's ever happened on story time before. Now, Fonu, you're not the only one that's outside.
- Yes.
- We've got someone else outside as well.
- And where is that pool?
- Hopefully, we won't lose connection.
- Does anybody recognise where that pool is?
- [Hector] We lost Fonu.
- Oh.
- Ah, Fonu's connection might have dropped out everybody, but that's all right. We'll hopefully get her back. That's okay.
- Got a bit of drawing going on at grandpa's house. And look at these two right there. I can see someone's doing a beautiful star there on some blue paper.
- Ah.
- We've got some glue on some things being stuck. Oh, look at that. That's a beautiful drawing of... Is that an owl? Oh very good. It's your cousin, the owl.
- I like that. Oh, I do like sticky tape.
- Yeah, I do like this sparkly sticky stuff we've found.
- Oh.
- Look at that coral garden.
- Look at that for coral.
- I know.
- Oh.
- I think we could have a bit of gold coral too, couldn't we?
- We could have some gold coral. I have a feeling everybody, that my sister, Solly, is making quite the coral garden for my grandma fish. I can tell.
- Has anybody there ever been snorkelling and seen the coral through their goggles? And the little fish and you too?
- Yeah.
- It's pretty beautiful, isn't it when you...? If you get the chance, even if it's not coral garden, even if you don't live somewhere tropical, under the water, there's always interesting things. Seaweed.
- Who would like to go diving? Nodding of the head? Yeah, yeah? Some people would really like to go diving.
- Yeah, it's fun.
- Ah, the ocean. Lovely place to explore. These summer holidays, I hope you got a chance to have an explore of the ocean. I haven't yet, but there's still hope. Summer's not over yet. I think I might use some of this instead of the fur. for a monkey grandma, a little bit of a sea snake kinda coral, kinda, you know? A little creature. I like my creatures.
- That's a good idea. There's lots of things under the sea that sort of look like this.
- Yeah.
- Stringy.
- Yeah.
- Snakey.
- Maybe we can ask our lovely producer, Hector, to bring up some of our grandmas for further inspiration.
- [Hector] Yep.
- I think maybe the monkey one first, Hector?
- Yep.
- We'll see. We'll see if he can find it. Ah, there, there's our monkey grandma. Ah, she's in a beautiful jungle scene, isn't she?
- They're like all those plants that Fonu had that she was making things out of.
- Yeah, and I just noticed looking closely, it looks like she's got a butterfly broach on. Can everybody see that? Butterfly broach?
- Yeah.
- And her fur looks a bit like a grandma's shawl, doesn't it?
- Yeah.
- She does look very kind, I think, that grandma.
- Very kind. I like the expression on her face. There's sort of like a small smile.
- I bet she's cheeky.
- I hope she's cheeky.
- Now look at our garden.
- Yeah. What's the next grandma? Does there anybody remember what the next grandma after the monkey grandma is? Yeah, the lizard. The lizard grandma. Oh, and look, she's actually got a very... Oh, the doily that we have. The doily that almost looks like her collar.
- It sure does.
- Oh, I think I might have to make it.
- That's a doily in the book.
- Lizard Grandma. And she's got amazing nails. Do you see her nails? Green tips. Ooh, my favourite colour. I definitely love the lizard grandma. What about the next grandma? Do you remember what the next grandma was? We've got the monkey grandma, we've got the lizard grandma, and then...? The fish Grandma. It's the universal sign for fish. Maybe Therese can actually show us. That's the fish. So that's Auslan for sign...
- Swimming fish?
- Sign, it's a fish.
- Fish.
- We can all practise that one. That's lovely. Oh and I love her bubble necklace and her glasses. Her reading glasses. Does your grandma read to you?
- She looks like she's almost gonna float away there in the ocean.
- I think so. And I think we can all guess the last grandma. What was the last grandma, everybody? The star grandma. Look I can see someone's made a 3D star.
- Wow.
- Grandma. Yeah. Look at that. And so her background, where's that grandma? In space. Sky.
- In the beautiful night sky.
- Oh look, we're getting shown a few more. It's almost like, I think you've got some paper... Some cupcake patty's too.
- Oh look at this beautiful one in the box.
- But yours are white.
- [Speaker] And someone whoo... Auntie Solly, she did the grandma in the sky.
- Oh, beautiful.
- Wow.
- If you can keep that for me, I'll come and visit you, I'd love that. That is beautiful.
- [Speaker] Love it.
- Thank you. Oh look at them. What's this one on the little Tupperware container, the little...? What are those things called?
- Yeah. Well there's-
- There's little bits stuck on the box on the...
- Yeah, there's two little kids working away in front of a sort of a grey couch. And Solly and I are trying to work out, 'cause oh, we wish we could zoom in on your table. So you've got a star grandma with your green top on.
- I want that one.
- You've got a star grandma. And what's the other? What's that one? Oh wow. It's a sculpture, it's a 3D sculpture. Which grandma, can you let us know?
- [Child] Fish.
- A Fish.
- It's the fish.
- Wow. You know what, maybe my fish and your fish. They could live in the same sea. They look like sort of ancestors of fish and...
- And what about this? Which grandma is this one with the blue top? Yeah, that one with the, I think there is a grandma there with you.
- Yeah. We're gonna have to wrap up in like three minutes. So please feel free to unmute yourself. Just one at a time. You can also use the reactions to raise your hand and unmute because we'd love to hear from you.
- Tell us about your grandma.
- [Child] The fish. It's the fish one.
- It's the fish grandma?
- Oh, lots of people have done the fish today.
- She's pretty cool.
- That's wonderful. What about the artist with the crocodile T-shirt on? Oh, you've got the spark... Wonderful. Feel free to unmute yourself and tell us more-
- The banana relative.
- [Speaker] He's saying that yeah, it's- I'm just making
- And we've got a real little fish.
- Oh, it's a monkey grandma.
- Oh good. I'm glad someone made monkey.
- That was a good use of your toilet roll.
- Very good.
- I'm gonna be inspired by you. Yeah. Unfortunately, I don't think Fonu might be able to connect with us again.
- What's that one? Oh wow.
- Oh!
- That's a great drawing.
- Do you wanna tell us what that one's of? Do you wanna explain it?
- And are we gonna see this little fish down the bottom in the... Doing some swimming?
- [Speaker] Super nice.
- Yeah.
- [Speaker] I thought it was grandma star.
- Oh. Grandma Star. Maybe your grandmas are merging. They've started off as one grandma and then they've turned into another through the materials that you've selected. Yeah.
- [Speaker] Evolving, evolving.
- Yeah. Now, Solly, I'm afraid to say that we have...
- It's time to go.
- Got to wrap up now.
- All right.
- So we've got to say-
- We'll go and play with our fish.
- Yeah, in our lovely environment. We're gonna go play with our grandmas, maybe make more.
- They're all saying hello to your grandmas.
- Yeah.
- [Speaker] Okay, Bye bye.
- Maybe you wanna keep on crafting. Thank you so much for joining us. We've had a lovely time reading the story, listening to the story, doing craft together. And we hope to see you again soon.
- Yeah.
- Let's...
- [Speaker] Bye bye. Thank you.
- Bye.
- Bye, everybody.
- Bye everybody.
- Happy crafting.
- Yeah.
- Yeah, bye.
- [Child] Bye.

- Keep crafting.

- Yeah. Good luck
- Happy cartwheeling.
- In your swimming.
- Happy sparkling.
