Neville Amadio AM MBE (1913-2006), flautist, played for some fifty years with iterations of the same Sydney orchestra, first called the 2FC Broadcasting Orchestra, then the ABC Orchestra then, from 1934, the Sydney Symphony. Born in Rose Bay into a musical family (his uncle, John, was married to Florence Austral, and his brothers all became professional musicians) he joined the 2FC Broadcasting Orchestra at the age of fourteen, in 1928. By 1934 he was principal flautist. He was a foundation performer of Musica Viva and the New Sydney Woodwind Quintet. He toured internationally many times, playing with the world’s great conductors, but was also a strong advocate for taking music to regional Australia, and was Professor of Flute at the New South Wales Conservatorium.
