Peter Carey (b. 1943), author, is only the second writer to twice win the Booker Prize, one of the world's major literary awards. He won it with Oscar and Lucinda (1988), an idiosyncratic romance once described as 'one of the finest Victorian novels of the twentieth century', and with the magnificent True History of the Kelly Gang (2000). Illywhacker (1985) was an earlier contender for the prize. Before becoming a full-time author Carey worked in advertising, contributing significantly to the success of the Australian wine industry with the slogan 'You make us smile, Dr Lindeman'. This photograph, characterised by Morley as 'the lark descending', was taken in Carey's Surry Hills office in 1989. Carey now lives and works in New York.
