Peteris Ciemitis was born in Western Australia in 1959, the son of Latvian refugees. He studied art at Perth's Claremont School and has been exhibiting in group and solo shows since 1993. His work, which he has described as being influenced by Latvian styles and Baltic cultural traditions, focuses on portraiture and figurative representation. Ciemitis has won various awards including the City of South Perth Art Award (2006) and the Black Swan Portraiture Prize (2010). His portrait of Paul Grabowsky was a finalist in the 2008 Archibald Prize.
