Frances Saville (1865-1935), soprano, came to Australia from San Francisco as a small child. Trained by her mother, she made her professional debut at 15 and enjoyed some success here before going to study with Mathilde Marchesi in Paris in 1891. She began her international opera career in Brussels in 1892, and spent two seasons at the Met and appeared at Covent Garden in the second half of the 1890s. From 1897 to 1903, when she retired, she was a member of the Vienna Opera.
