National Photographic Portrait Prize 2020 Finalist
Phoebe Parker turned one hundred years old two days before this portrait was taken. Fiercely independent, Phoebe still lives by herself in her Frankston home where she tends to her beloved rose garden. Her extraordinary life has seen her serve in the Second World War with the Australian Signals Division, and she still proudly marches on Anzac Day every year. She is currently preparing to embark on her sixth cruise ship voyage of 2019. When I asked her to pause and reflect on her long journey through life, I felt a hint of sadness momentarily veiled her normally indomitable nature.
