Less elaborate styles and looks were in vogue and wigs fell out of favour. In this mood of egalitarianism and neo-classicism, men developed a preference for short, unfussy, tousled hairstyles. Men tended to remain clean-shaven, but in the early decades of the nineteenth century, side whiskers began to migrate further down the cheeks.
This exhibition illustrates changes in beards, moustaches and sideburns from the 1780s to the 1980s.
