National Portrait Gallery Chair, Dr Helen Nugent AO and Director Louise Doyle invite the media to preview the exhibition Paul Kelly & The Portraits, and the official launch of Paul Kelly – Portrait of an Artist Schools’ Education and Curriculum program on Wednesday 19 June 2013 at 11am at the National Portrait Gallery. The show will be launched later that evening by The Hon Tony Burke MP.
Paul Kelly & The Portraits presents a multifaceted image of the performer over the course of his career. The exhibition’s iconic images of Kelly - regarded by many as an Australian people’s poet - successfully capture the more elusive aspects of his character. The 18 works are drawn from some of Australia’s leading music industry photographers, artists, works from Gallery’s collection and loaned works. The artists include Greg Noakes, Wendy McDougall, Tony Mott, Martin Philbey, Liz Reid, Peter Brew Bevan, Bleddyn Butcher, Jon Campbell, Peter Hudson, Stu Spence and Jon Lewis.
A newly-commissioned digital video portrait of Kelly by writer, director and cinematographer Warwick Thornton will be unveiled at the 6pm exhibition opening by Minister Burke.
Developed in partnership with Shark Island Productions and The Caledonia Foundation, the Paul Kelly – Portrait of an Artist Schools’ Education and Curriculum program is a diverse range of resources for secondary schools that provide teachers and students with dynamic, contemporary and highly engaging curriculum materials with an Australian voice in an Australian context. It includes a National Curriculum Resource in English and Music for Years 11 and 12, a book of eEssays by some of Australia’s leading writers and a school’s version of the award-winning documentary Paul Kelly – Stories of Me. It allows teachers to adapt to their state syllabus requirements while implementing the new Australian Curriculum.

The exhibition will be on display at the National Portrait Gallery until 1 September 2013 and will then tour to the Blue Mountains Cultural Centre, Tamworth Gallery in NSW and Mornington Peninsula Regional Gallery in Victoria.
