The National Portrait Gallery is thrilled to be named the winner of the Museums Australasia Multimedia and Publication Design Awards in the category of exhibition major catalogue level B, for our publication So Fine: Contemporary women artists make Australian history.
We are also excited to have been highly commended for our digital 20/20 Portrait Series.
A sumptuous publication, the catalogue brings together the work of ten Australian women artists exploring Australian history from the female perspective.
The artists, who responded to our invitation to create new work, are reflected in the some 300 pages of this publication which has enabled an exquisite but ephemeral exhibition to live on.
The Gallery is proud to have received this award and salutes the seven other galleries shortlisted for the prize including the National Gallery of Australia and the National Gallery of Victoria.
The Gallery's Director Karen Quinlan said the announcement overnight was a reflection on the talent of the Gallery’s in-house design department, along with the contributions of its curators and editor.
“We are passionate about telling the stories of Australia here at the home of portraiture, and we welcome the recognition of MAPDA overnight,” she said.
“The work of the ten female artists that made up this exhibition is reflected in this beautiful publication.
“The insights shared by the curators and artists themselves through this exploration of Australian history from the female perspective are profound.”
The award was presented in Alice Springs, with designer Brett Wiencke and editor Stephen Phillips in attendance to accept the award.
Copies of the book are still available and can be bought through the Gallery.
