The Gallery recognises that, as far as reasonably possible, public sector information should be treated as a national resource. In support of this principle, it seeks to publish the following information on how it makes decisions and administers programs.
Agency plan
Since 1 July 2013 the National Portrait Gallery is a corporate Commonwealth entity, which renders it subject to the Freedom of Information Act 1982 (FOI Act). Reforms to the FOI Act have established the Information Publication Scheme (IPS). This agency plan has been prepared to assist the NPG in implementing the IPS, as required by subsection 8(1) of the FOI Act.
Who we are
The National Portrait Gallery was established by the National Portrait Gallery of Australia Act 2012. In broad terms its functions are to:
- develop, preserve, maintain, promote and provide access to a national collection of portraits
- develop and engage a national audience, including through exhibitions, education, research, publications and public and online programs
The Act provides more detail on the Gallery's functions, and outlines the powers of the Gallery, the Minister, the Board, its Chairman and the Director. The Minister for the Arts has portfolio responsibility for the Gallery, which operates as a statutory authority under the Public Governance, Performance and Accountability Act 2013.
Read about the Gallery's mission and values, policies and plans, budgets and performance. For a sense of the structure of the organisation, see the key staff contacts list.
FOI and file titles
Information published as part of this plan:
- lists of the titles of files created by Gallery staff for each six-month period
- disclosures as a result of a 'freedom of information' (FOI) request – along with information on how to lodge an FOI request
Responses to parliament
Submissions to parliamentary committees, the Australian Law Reform Commission and other agencies will be published here as they are created.
Consultation
In the event that the Gallery contributes to a specific policy proposal, public consultation will be undertaken. External consultation measures may include the release of discussion papers and the use of social media .
The Director maintains the Gallery's compliance with the IPS. For any enquiries please contact:
