John Doyle and Greig Pickhaver met in 1985, and have been collaborating as the infamous, irreverent sports commentary duo ‘Roy and HG’ ever since. Their exuberant, sometimes risqué fare has included long-running radio program This Sporting Life, their highly successful Olympics coverage ‘The Dream’, live commentary of grand finals, and even calls of the Melbourne Cup. The pair’s satirical approach to the vagaries of sport has appealed to a multitude of fans, both sporting and non-sporting. And they have long recognised how to keep their performances naturally spontaneous: they don’t socialise too often! ‘Friendship is a very tricky thing because we’re colleagues who ad-lib’, explained Pickhaver to Australian Story. ‘So when we get together … we amuse each other by being Roy and HG. The trouble is, we come to work and we think, “Well, we’ve done all this”.’
