Professor Leslie Wilkinson (1882-1973) was born in London and initially apprenticed to a stained-glass designer before studying architecture at the Royal Academy (1902-1906). He won many awards and by 1908 had been appointed to the staff of the London University School of Architecture, (Assistant Professor 1908-1918). He was invited to take up the first Chair in Architecture at the University of Sydney in 1918 and from the following year also carried out many commissions for the University, including completion of the main Quadrangle and the Physics building. He received many honours and awards, including the Sulman Prize in 1935 and 1942, and in 1960, was the first Royal Australian Institute of Architects Gold Medallist.
