Lady [Hannah] Lloyd Jones

Lady Hannah Benyon Lloyd Jones OBE (1901–1982) was the third wife of Sir Charles Lloyd Jones, the chairman of David Jones from 1920 until his death in 1958. Married in Chicago in 1929, she and Sir Lloyd Jones returned to Sydney in the early 1930s. They lived at Rosemont, a colonial-era mansion in Woollahra, which subsequently became famous as the venue for the many functions hosted by Lady Lloyd Jones, whose guests included Sir Robert and Dame Pattie Menzies, RG Casey, Noel Coward and the Duke of Edinburgh. Active in aid of charities including the Royal Blind Society, Legacy and Barnardo's and a fundraiser for organisations such as the National Trust, the Sydney Symphony Orchestra and the Art Gallery Society of NSW, she was known for her taste in fashion, interior decoration, art and gardening.

One of Australia's most successful portrait painters, Judy Cassab's first commission after emigrating to Australia in 1951 was to paint Lady Lloyd Jones. At the time, Cassab was living in a boarding house in Bondi and was famously picked up in Sir Lloyd Jones' Rolls Royce for the sitting. This second portrait, painted in 1970, is a good example of Cassab's portraiture at the height of her career, following on from her Archibald prize-winning portraits in 1960 and 1967.
