Guy Stuart (1942-2024) studied under John Brack at Melbourne Grammar School between 1956 and 1960. During this period, he made visits to Japan that would permanently influence his aesthetic response. In the early 1960s he studied painting at RMIT; he ended the decade with three exhibitions at Gallery A, including, in 1970, The Continuous Wooden Floor, a site-specific installation that completely filled the space. Built then gradually disassembled over the time of the exhibition, the floor comprised the evolving work of art. An Australian representative at the Sao Paulo Biennale, in the 1970s Stuart had five exhibitions at Pinocotheca. His work was exhibited in the National Portrait Gallery exhibition Intimate Portraits in 2002. Stuart's work is represented in the National Gallery of Australia collection and all state galleries.
