Andrzej Tadeusz Bonawentura Kosciuszko (1746–1817) is a national hero in Poland, Lithuania, Belarus and the United States. A soldier by profession, Kosciuszko participated in notable revolutionary causes – for example, fighting on the side of the republicans in the American Revolutionary War and leading the 1794 Polish uprising against Russia. Polish explorer Paul Edmund de Strzelecki (1797–1873) gave Kosciuszko’s name to Australia’s highest peak during the course of his 1840 geographical survey – supposedly because the shape of the mountain reminded Strzelecki of Kosciuszko’s tomb.
