Toni Matičevski (b. 1977), fashion designer, grew up in the Macedonian community in Seddon, Melbourne. Graduating with honours from his design degree at RMIT, he gained an internship with Donna Karan in New York, but refused an offer of continuing employment with the prestigious house. He worked at Cerruti in Paris before returning to Australia in 1998 to launch his own label. Showing at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week in Sydney from 2002, from 2006 to 2010 he showed in New York, and since 2012 he has presented collections regularly in Paris. With a reputation for being a ‘lovely bloke’ as well as a veritable genius with fabric, Matičevski has designed costumes for two productions of Phillip Adams Ballet Lab, sharing a Helpmann award for Aviary (2011). His ready to wear line is stocked in more than 35 countries worldwide, and he also offers a couture and bridal made-to-order service. In 2016, the year Matičevski was named Australian Fashion Laureate, the Bendigo Art Gallery staged Dark Wonderland, a retrospective of his work that coincided with the launch of Elegant Rebel, a book showcasing his wondrous creations.
