Michael Klim rose to superstar status in Australian swimming in 1998 by winning seven medals in seven events at the World Swimming Championships. In the Commonwealth Games in Kuala Lumpur that year, he again won seven medals including four gold. At the Sydney 2000 Olympics he won gold in the 4 x 200m freestyle relay and the 4 x 100m freestyle relay, and silver in the 200m butterfly and the 4 x 100m medley relay. He is ranked in the top three swimmers in the world over 100m freestyle, 50m butterfly and 100m butterfly.
