Thomas Foster Chuck (c. 1826-1898) specialised in photographing well-known colonists, many of whom featured amongst the 700 photographs in his huge mosaic The Explorers and Early Colonists of Victoria. Chuck enjoyed a protracted income from his three years' work on the mosaic, photographs from which he sold individually to the sitters and to the general public. He produced and exhibited a Grand Moving Diorama of Victorian Exploring Expedition (Burke and Wills) comprising some 16 scenes of the Burke and Wills expedition. This was exhibited in abbreviated form in Melbourne, Ballarat, Sydney and Hobart.
