Robert Dodd, a leading painter of maritime and military subjects, lived and worked in Wapping, London. Though little is known of his education or training, he was clearly a prolific printmaker who published much of his own work. He exhibited with the Society of Artists and at the Royal Academy between 1782 and 1809. His engravings are characterised by their high drama and include detailed studies of famous ships, representations of naval actions, and battle scenes from the Napoleonic and American Revolutionary wars. A number of Dodd's works are in the collection of the National Maritime Museum at Greenwich.
