Robert Banks Jenkinson, 2nd Earl Liverpool, Lord Hawkesbury (1770–1828), statesman, was the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom from 1812 to 1827. The son of a close adviser of George III’s, Jenkinson was educated at Oxford and was 20 years old when first elected to the House of Commons. He assumed the title Lord Hawkesbury in 1796 and in 1803 was elevated to the House of Lords. Jenkinson also served as Foreign Secretary (1801-03); Home Secretary (1804); and Secretary of State for War and the Colonies (1809-1812). He became Prime Minister in 1812, having assumed the title Earl of Liverpool on the death of his father in 1809. Jenkinson instigated the Bigge commission on convict transportation; the Sydney suburb of Liverpool is named after him.
Jenkinson's father, Charles, was the 1st Earl Liverpoo,l and Lord Hawkesbury; the Hawkesbury River and region are named in his honour.
