Reginald Henry Jerrold-Nathan (1889-1979) arrived in Australia from London in 1924, having studied under John Singer Sargent and William Orpen at the Royal Academy, where he was awarded a medal for portrait painting. After coming to Australia he became known for his portraits and landscapes. From 1945 to 1952 he was president of the Australian Art Society. Amongst his portrait subjects are Samuel Angus, Millicent Preston-Stanley, Jessie Street, Ethel Curlewis and Ngarla Kunoth (Rosalie Kunoth-Monks), and a number of figures associated with the University of Sydney including Vice Chancellor and Chancellor William Portus Cullen, and Vice Chancellor Cecil Purser.
