Peter Brock (1945-2006), a professional racing driver from 1972 to 1997, was undoubtedly Australia's best known and most popular motor sports personality. 'Peter Perfect' won the Bathurst Enduro race nine times, the Sandown Endurance race nine times and the Australia Touring Car Championship three times. In all he won 37 ATCC races, five more than Allan Moffat and far more than any other driver. Brock built his first racing car, an Austin A30 with a Holden engine, in a chookshed in his parents' backyard and first raced at the Mount Panorama circuit in Bathurst in 1969. It is from this circuit that his alternative nickname 'King of the Mountain' derives. Of his 205 ATCC starts, 180 were in Holdens. After his retirement the committed vegan became involved with various philanthropic causes, most notably the Peter Brock Foundation, which provides cash donations to troubled families, young people and community organisations, and Green Fleet, which encourages investment in trees to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
