Norm Provan (1932-2021), footballer and coach, played junior rugby league for Sutherland and trialled unsuccessfully for Eastern Suburbs before being signed by the St George Dragons in 1951. The 193 cm tall second-rower played in ten of St George's eleven consecutive premiership wins, including five as captain-coach from 1961 to 1965. He played the first of his over 25 games for New South Wales in 1954 and in the same year was selected to play for Australia. He went on to represent his country in 18 Test and World Cup matches between 1954 and 1960. While 'never a shiner' according to one 1957 account, Provan 'was just as hard in his tackling as he was brilliant in attack'. He retired from playing football in 1966 and went on to coach St George, Parramatta and Cronulla teams. Norm Provan was included in the list of rugby league's 100 Greatest Players and named in the Team of the Century during the game's centenary celebrations in 2008.
