Michael Anderson, sheep farmer and Aboriginal land rights activist, was born in Brewarrina, NSW. After studying Law he worked at the NSW Office of Public Prosecutions, and later taught Political Science at the Universities of New England and Newcastle. On Australia Day 1972 he was one of four Aboriginal activists who set up the original "tent embassy" opposite the old Parliament House building. Anderson, who now runs a successful sheep farm near the NSW town of Goodooga, remains active on land rights and other indigenous issues, and has recently been involved in drafting a Declaration of the Rights of Indigenous Peoples of the World for the United Nations. During the 2004 Federal Election he ran as a Greens candidate for the rural electorate of Gwydir, in an unsuccessful attempt to unseat the incumbent member, Deputy Prime Minister John Anderson.
