Matthew Sleeth began his photographic career with a number of monographs including Roaring Days, The Bank Book and Tour of Duty. In 2005/6 he lived in Tokyo as part of the Australia Council's studio residency program; he was named as one of Australia's 50 most collectable artists by Australian Art Collector in 2006 and 2008. His book Tour of Duty was included in The Photobook: A History by Martin Parr and Gerry Badger. Sleeth states that in recent years his 'practice has been more conceptually driven, working across media, primarily engaging with photography in addition to video, sculpture and print-making'. Pattern Recognition, exhibited in the 2008 Melbourne International Arts Festival, was described as exploring 'ideas about photography itself'. His most recent exhibition, Various Positions (parts 1 through 6), opened at New York's Claire Oliver Gallery in Chelsea, Manhattan in March 2009, and was described as 'working toward a new photographic aesthetic'.
