Jozef Vissel (b. 1935), photographer, is best known for his 1965 portrait of architect Jørn Utzon, in the National Portrait Gallery collection. Born in Holland, Vissel is a Holocaust survivor whose parents died in Auschwitz. He began his career in Amsterdam as an apprentice to a leading commercial photographer before working in England. In 1960, he moved to Sydney, where he became a stills photographer in the film industry. Vissel then established his own studio, freelancing for advertising clients and the Australian Tourist Commission. He later worked as a photographer at Macquarie University. His photographs have appeared in publications in Australia, Europe, the USA and Japan and he has published two books, The Tongans (1978) and The Down Under T-shirt Thing (1979). The State Library of New South Wales holds a large collection of his work.
