John Kaldor, textile designer and manufacturer, was born in Hungary. He came to Australia with his family in 1948. His parents, Andrew and Vera Kaldor, founded Sekers Silk. Following study in London, he attended the Textile College of Zurich under the direction of Bauhaus master Johannes Itten. In 1970, he founded John Kaldor Fabricmaker Pty Ltd which subsequently traded as John Kaldor. The company has since established subsidiaries in the USA and the UK. Kaldor has continued to design while directing his company and has maintained a Kaldor family relationship with textiles that has spanned a century. Through the John Kaldor Art Project he undertaken projects in the contemporary art world, involving international artists including Gilbert and George, Sol Lewitt, Richard Long and Christo. It was Kaldor who brought Christo to Australia for a 20 year retrospective at the AGNSW in 1990. Kaldor is currently serving as Chairman of the Board at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Sydney and has been appointed to the International Board of the Museum of Modern Art in New York.
