John Allen Manton (1807–1864), Wesleyan minister, arrived in Australia in 1831. After six months at Parramatta, he became minister at the Macquarie Harbour penal station in Van Diemen’s Land; and in 1833 the first chaplain of the Port Arthur settlement. While at Port Arthur, Manton conducted schools for adult and juvenile convicts; he left his Port Arthur role in 1841 and became involved in the establishment of a Wesleyan school for boys at Campbell Town. In New South Wales again from 1863, he was the first principal of Newington College, performing this role until his death in September 1864.
