Ita Buttrose AO OBE (b.1942) is one of the few women to have achieved a high public profile in Australia in the 1970s. She joined Australian Consolidated Press as a copygirl at the age of 15. Eight years after becoming the protégé of Sir Frank Packer she was appointed editor of the women's pages of the Sydney Daily Telegraph. Ita Buttrose was founding editor of Cleo magazine (1972 -5) and has been a regular broadcaster and activist in the area of community affairs. She chaired the National Advisory Committee on AIDS (1984-88).
