Henry 'Harry' Crock AO (1929-2018), surgeon and educator, attended school and university in Perth and studied further in Melbourne, where he won the Rector's Medal for Debating at Newman College as well as academic honours including the Gold Medal for Anatomy and the Ryan Scholarship and Medal in Medicine and Surgery. In the late 1950s he worked in the Orthopaedic Surgery Department at the University of Oxford. He returned to Melbourne to lecture in the Department of Surgery at the University of Melbourne in 1959-1960; from 1977 to 1986 he was a Professorial Associate there. Meanwhile, from 1961 to 1986 he was Senior Orthopaedic Surgeon at St Vincent's Hospital, Melbourne. From 1986 onwards he was the Director of the Spinal Disorders Unit at London's Cromwell Hospital, and a consultant Spinal Surgeon and Lecturer at the Hammersmith Hospital. Crock is a Foundation Member and Past President of the International Society for the Study of the Lumbar Spine and a Foundation Member of the European Spine Society, and has been the Chairman of the DISCS Charitable Trust since 1993. He wrote or co-wrote several key medical texts including The Blood Supply of the Lower Limb Bones in Man (1967), The Blood Supply of the Vertebral Column and Spinal Cord in Man (1977), Practice of Spinal Surgery (1993) and An Atlas of the Vascular Anatomy of the Skeleton and Spinal Cord (1996). He also wrote and directed the DVD Essentials of Lumbar Puncture Technique with his daughter, Dr Catherine Crock, with whom he also collaborated on the book The Conus Medullaris and Cauda Equina in Man (1986).
