James Freeman, who is credited with bringing the wet-plate photographic process to New South Wales, arrived in Sydney in 1854 to join his brother William, who had arrived the year before. There are 18 000 Freeman negatives in Sydney's Mitchell Library alone, and it is estimated that the brothers had taken some 30 000 pictures before the date of the earliest photograph in the Library. Freeman's was the longest running photographic establishment in Australia.
