Francesco Bartolozzi (1727-1815), engraver, was born in Florence, where he learned to paint. Having trained in engraving in Venice, he worked briefly in Rome before moving to London in 1764. Four years later he became a founding member of the Royal Academy. Bartolozzi's great technological breakthrough was the invention of a stipple technique for coloured engravings. In 1802 he was invited to become Director of the National Academy in Lisbon. He died in Portugal.
