Cate Blanchett AC (b. 1969), actor and humanitarian, graduated from the National Institute of Dramatic Art in 1992, joined the Sydney Theatre Company (STC) and soon received the Sydney Theatre Critics' Circle award for Best Newcomer for
Kafka Dances (1993). She starred in Australian films and television shows before her breakout film
Elizabeth (1998), for which she won her first Golden Globe. She won Academy Awards for
Aviator (2004) and
Blue Jasmine (2013), which also earned her a Golden Globe, New York Film Critics Circle award, the National Society of Film Critics award and the BAFTA. For her performance as the young Bob Dylan in
I'm Not There (2007) she won a Golden Globe and the Volpi Cup for Best Actress at the Venice Film Festival.
Carol (2015) gained her Oscar, Golden Globe and BAFTA nominations. A leading advocate for the arts in Australia, Blanchett was joint artistic director of the STC with her husband Andrew Upton from 2008 to 2013 and won worldwide accolades for her performances in productions including
Uncle Vanya in New York. A Goodwill Ambassador for UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency, Blanchett co-created, co-executive produced and co-starred in the ABC drama
Stateless (2020), about Australia's immigration detention centres. It won 22 awards at the Australian Academy of Cinema and Television Arts awards. In 2021 she was nominated for a Golden Globe and a Screen Actors Guild award for her role in the television series
Mrs America. Blanchett has three honorary doctorates and is a Chevalier d'Ordre des Arts et des Lettres.
