Ambroise Tardieu (1788–1841) was a leading French cartographer and engraver. Trained by his uncle Pierre, also an engraver, he came to specialise in engraving portraits and maps. He made more than 800 portraits, many of scientists, and published several atlases including Atlas universel de geographie, ancienne et moderne/dresse par Ambroise Tardieu pour l'intelligence de la Geographie universelle par Malte-Brun. Ambroise Tardieu’s son, Auguste Ambroise Tardieu, was also an artist, as well as a scholar of forensic medicine; he illustrated Pierre François Olive Rayer's three-volume Traité des maladies des reins (Treatise on diseases of the kidneys) (1839–41).
