London-born, Adelaide-based photographic artist and filmmaker Alex Frayne (b. 1975) studied film at Flinders University. After making short films and a feature film (Modern love), Frayne focused on photography, achieving success with his Adelaide noir (2014) and Theatre of life (2017) series and books. In 2020 he published his third book with Wakefield Press, Landscapes of South Australia. Frayne was a finalist in the 2012 and 2017 National Photographic Portrait Prize with The seventy year old jetty jumper 2011 and The hermit 2016. His series The overseers of streets, featuring powerful images of the homeless community, raised awareness of poverty in Adelaide. When asked in 2012 if he had any advice for would-be photographers, he said: 'Stop being obsessed about gear. Stop talking about megapixels and start talking about emotional impact.'
