Adrienne Doig (b. 1963) employs self-portraiture to explore her experiences of everyday life with good humour and wit, fusing historical references and humour to respond to reflect on the here and now. Using a variety of media, including embroidery, applique, sculpture and video, Doig playfully explores intimate aspects of her life while also responding to universal themes around social, environmental and political issues. By manipulating, reworking and combining imagery from multiple sources, Doig records her own experiences within a larger context.
Doig graduated with a Bachelor of Visual Arts from the College of Fine Arts, Sydney (1989), and has a Certificate Art and Drama from Ryflkle Folkehogskule, Norway (1983). She has undertaken residencies at the American Academy, Rome (2014), the Moya Dyring studio, Paris (2007), the Visual Arts Craft Board of the Australia Council studio residency in Milan (2003) and the Austrian Federal Chancellory studio residency in Vienna (2001). She has exhibited in contemporary art spaces and artist-run and commercial galleries in Australia and abroad.
