Adam Perkins, an Arrernte and Kalkadoon man, is the son of Indigenous rights campaigner and bureaucrat Charles Perkins AO. He graduated from the University of New South Wales with a Bachelor of Commerce and worked in stockbroking before becoming a private investor. Perkins is chair of the Charlie Perkins Scholarship Trust, which supports talented Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Australians to undertake postgraduate study at the University of Oxford and the University of Cambridge. In 1993, Adam's sister Rachel Perkins made a four-part documentary about their father, Freedom Ride – Blood Brothers. Adam played Charles as a young man.
