National Photographic Portrait Prize 2009 Finalist
The Honourable Mr Joe Hockey, Minister for Workplace Relations at the 2007 National Tally Room, Canberra. I caught this photograph of Joe as it became clear the Federal Government had failed to be re-elected. Joe explains, 'The set was like a cauldron. It was incredibly hot, incredibly hot, and then you had what seemed like endless hours of broadcast under the lights and plus we were losing... It was a swirling amphitheatre and it just felt like I was in hell.'
In its second year at the National Portrait Gallery, and for the first time touring to other venues, the National Photographic Portrait Prize 2009 continues to present surprising perspectives on the nature of contemporary portrait photography.
