Aadi and Alamelu Ganesan, 2011

by Sandra Ramacher

National Photographic Portrait Prize 2012 Finalist

Aadi is Alamelu's daughter. She was born in Sydney and is first generation Australian. Alamelu came to Australia in 1992 to fulfil an arranged marriage. In India, she was a fully qualified GP and it took her ten years to become qualified in Australia. She says it was the hardest ten years of her life because there was no emotional support provided to immigrants and there still isn't. Aadi says she does not experience any of the difficulties her mother did and thinks Australia is one of the most accepting countries in the world.
