Barry Jones personifies the term polymath. As a former teacher, quiz master, lawyer, social activist, writer and politician, Barry has made a wide-ranging contribution, to education, to science, to the arts, and indeed – through his leadership of the successful campaign against capital punishment – to the very moral fibre of our society. Barry, 90 years old this year, came to my studio to sit for this portrait, negotiating with equanimity the long flight of stairs up here. This sage, unassuming man proved to be quite at one with the stillness and quiet directness that is the essence of my portraiture.
