National Photographic Portrait Prize 2014 Finalist
This portrait of Lah is from a larger series of images I shot at Dickson College. Lah is part of the refugee bridging program and I wanted to capture some of his character and also give a hint of the transition into school in Australia as he forms his identity. I gave him no instruction other than to stare down the camera and be as neutral as possible and yet here he stands, slightly sweaty, oily, rough around the edges, but proud.
The National Photographic Portrait Prize exhibition is selected from a national field of entries that reflect the distinctive vision of Australia's aspiring and professional portrait photographers and the unique nature of their subjects.
