National Photographic Portrait Prize 2007 Finalist
This image is part of a series investigating changes in contemporary Australian masculinity. What is the male role? Men have been challenged to construct a new 'model' of masculinity, taking elements from traditional hegemonic archetypes and combining them with current societal expectations. The series illustrates men in their traditionally known 'domains' and non traditional/ new domains. This image is of a pub, where men of varying age, sexuality and social status gather daily with a common goal: to relax and unwind. It was shot on a Linhof Technica camera on 4x5 sheet film, with various cinema lights used throughout the space to highlight individual characters.
Photography is the most pervasive and popular medium for portraiture and makes a natural fit with the Gallery, being a natural extension of the Gallery's longstanding commitment to photography as a contemporary portrait medium.
