Linda Jackson, with Jenny Kee, Flamingo Park, Sydney, ‘73, 1973

Carol Jerrems

gelatin silver photograph on paper (image: 16.4cm x 24.8cm. sheet: 20.2cm x 25.4cm. frame: 43.2cm x 58.5cm)

Fashion designers and collaborators Linda Jackson (b. 1950) and Jenny Kee (b. 1947) are photographed in their much-loved retail store, Flamingo Park in Sydney’s Strand Arcade, just after it opened in 1973. Icons of Australian fashion, their style eschewed trends and instead drew on local and international art and culture through exuberant shapes and colours.

In the photograph, Jackson, another Prahran Technical College alumna, greets the camera in her ‘70s peaked hat and high-waisted summer outfit, while Kee speaks on the telephone in the background, her hand casually resting in her blazer pocket. Between the indoor plant, the racks of patterned clothing and the sculpted swan, there is a dynamism and playful ebullience in keeping with the fashion that Jackson and Kee pioneered.
