National Photographic Portrait Prize 2022 Finalist
This is a portrait of my friend Sarah at 36 weeks. It was an out-take, made during a portrait session. It's miles away from the image I was trying to make, one that included her three-year-old son, Joe. We tried every child-wrangling trick to have Joe in the photo, but he never did acquiesce. Here Sarah bends to pick up the teddy bear he has thrown at her and in doing so adopts the classic posture of late-stage pregnancy – the bent knees and the hand supporting the hip, every part of her body compensating for the swollen abdomen.
