Darling Portrait Prize 2022 Finalist
I moved home to Australia at the beginning of 2020 after 28 years living overseas, mainly in London. It has been a strange time to return but I've had room to experiment and develop the way I work. I paint still life and have wanted to bring portraiture back into my practice for some time. It made sense to paint myself first before anyone else. I've portrayed myself here setting up a still life. It can take minutes, hours or even days of moving objects around until they coalesce to form a compelling composition, spare, quiet, yet resonant with meaning.
The Darling Portrait Prize is a biennial national prize for Australian portrait painting honouring the legacy of Mr L Gordon Darling AC CMG (1921-2015). The winner receives a cash prize of $75,000.
